Interference suppression in bilingualism: Stimulus-Stimulus vs. Stimulus-Response conflict

چکیده
Abstract Studies examining the potential effects of bilingualism on interference suppression show inconsistent results. Our study approaches this topic by distinguishing two subcomponents within (i.e., Stimulus-Stimulus and Stimulus-Response conflict). We investigated through their operationalisation in different tasks examined role language proficiency modulating it. A sample 111 young adult participants performed four non-linguistic cognitive measuring both visual auditory domains control. Bilinguals outperformed monolinguals involving conflict, but showed comparable performance conflict. Specific control were observed: group differences inhibition orienting only observed between high-proficient bilinguals monolinguals. Taken together, types conflicts involved could differentially affect bilinguals.

Context Modulates Early Stimulus Processing when Resolving Stimulus-response Conflict
When responding to stimuli in our environment, the presence of multiple items associated with task-relevant responses affects both ongoing response selection and subsequent behavior. Computational modeling of conflict monitoring and neuroimaging data predict that the recent context of response competition will bias the selection of certain stimuli over others very early in the processing stream...
متن کاملStimulus ambiguity elicits response conflict.
Conflict monitoring theory [M.M. Botvinick, T. Braver, D. Barch, C. Carter, J.D. Cohen, Conflict monitoring and cognitive control, Psychol. Rev. 108 (2001) 625-652] assumes that perceptual ambiguity among choice stimuli elicits response conflict in choice reaction. It hence predicts that response conflict is also involved in elementary variants of choice reaction time (RT) tasks, i.e., those va...
متن کاملTemporal and spectral profiles of stimulus-stimulus and stimulus-response conflict processing
The ability to detect and resolve conflict is an essential function of cognitive control. Laboratory studies often use stimulus-response-compatibility (SRC) tasks to examine conflict processing in order to elucidate the mechanism and modular organization of cognitive control. Inspired by two influential theories regarding cognitive control, the conflict monitoring theory (Botvinick, Braver, Bar...
متن کاملInteractions between stimulus-stimulus congruence and stimulus-response compatibility
According to a central claim of Kornblum's dimensional-overlap model, response-related processes do not start before stimulus-related processes have been completed, which implies an additive relationship between effects of stimulus-stimulus congruence and stimulus-response compatibility. Three experiments were conducted to test this prediction. In Exp. 1, additive effects of color-word congruen...
متن کاملAnticipating Conflict Facilitates Controlled Stimulus-response Selection
Cognitive control can be triggered in reaction to previous conflict, as suggested by the finding of sequential effects in conflict tasks. Can control also be triggered proactively by presenting cues predicting conflict ("proactive control")? We exploited the high temporal resolution of ERPs and controlled for sequential effects to ask whether proactive control based on anticipating conflict mod...
